Forest bathing (shinrin-yoku)

Forest bathing (shinrin-yoku)

Advice I give to all my clients

In herbal medicine you can also think of your environment as medicine, in addition to pills, creams, teas and tinctures. When did you last go out into nature? I can't get enough of the forest myself. Yesterday we stood still at a heavenly sunset with phenomenal scents and colors. A Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) among the sloping moors seemed ablaze with the celestial red glow that shone on the bright orange-brown bark. We found flowering lingonberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) die tegelijkertijd bessen dragen. En zelfs de Struikhei (Calluna vulgaris) is already in bloom sporadically, which does that normally around September. Later on, we looked at a view where we stopped to contemplate about the beauty of nature, the tranquility and the positive feelings it gave us. An evening full of surprises.

Ooit gehoord van forest bathing?

In Japan, this concept of shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, is booming! Several studies show that spending time in the forest has significant physical and psychological effects, compared to an urban environment. After a visit to a forest, positive feelings appear to be increased significantly, while negative feelings are strongly reduced. In addition, stress and inflammation appear to be significantly reduced and the immune system is particularly stimulated in a forest environment. The level of cortisol (the “stress” hormone) drops in our bodies and reductions in blood pressure and heart rate are observed, thereby increasing the number of white blood cells. All the reason to go forest bathing on this sunny day!
